What are Open Educational Resources

Open Educational Resources are educational materials offered freely and openly for anyone to use. They are usually licensed to allow sharing, remixing, or customization. The resources can include textbooks, full courses, course materials, modules, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other resources used to support access to knowledge.

Open Sourced Textbooks

Search across multiple OER repositories for resources.
MERLOT
An expansive collection from California State University of learning materials for all education levels, and one of the world’s largest collections of open textbooks.
Open Textbook Library
A curated catalog of open textbooks, meant to be a tool for instructors. This catalog includes and accepts reviews from faculty members.
Open SUNY
An open access textbook publishing initiative established by State University of New York libraries, and launched in 2012.
OpenStax
High -quality, peer reviewed textbooks available in electronic and print forms, also with supporting works such as study guides and tests. Mostly books for large survey classes on the freshman level. Project supported by Rice University and several large foundations including the Gates Foundation and the Hewlett Foundation.

PASCAL

PASCAL the Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries offers support and guidance in implementing OER, into your classes.

SCALE
South Carolina Affordable Learning (SCALE), is an initiative of the Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries that seeks to reduce the overall cost of higher education for students by promoting the use of quality low-cost and no-cost learning materials.
PALS
The Professor for Affordable Learning (PAL) award recognizes faculty who have already integrated affordable learning into their classrooms. These affordable course materials could include Open Educational Resources (high-quality teaching materials that are free for people everywhere to use and re-purpose), items freely available on the internet, or library resources.
