"The purpose of a research paper is to synthesize previous research and scholarship with your ideas on the subject. Therefore, you should feel free to use other persons' words, facts, and thoughts in your research paper, but the material you borrow must not be presented as if it were your own creation."
MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 7th Edition. New York: MLA. 55. Print.
There are quite a few different ways to cite resources in your paper. The citation style usually depends on the academic discipline involved:
Check with your professor to make sure you use the required style. And whatever style you choose, BE CONSISTENT!
Throughout this guide, you will see DOI referred to multiple times.
Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric code that identifies a document or article and provides it with a permanent web address. DOIs are usually printed in online articles, often on the first page, in the header or footer, or below the title. Sources located through an academic database should always include a DOI.
In other case, a permalink URL should suffice.
When adding a title that is in a foreign languge, follow these basic rules regardless of citation style:
| For German... | For French... | For Italian... |
|---|---|---|
|
capitalize the first word and all nouns. |
capitalize THROUGH the first noun in the title. |
and other languages, capitalize just the first word. |
NOTE: Always capitalize all proper nouns.
